As Joe Biden’s “Build Back Better” massive spending plan bogs down in Congress, the progressive far-left wing of Democratic lawmakers and the corporate media are working on a new talking point, with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) leading the way. Now we are being told that if reluctant members of Congress do not cave into Biden’s crazy demands, American democracy itself will have failed.
The $3.5 trillion budget reconciliation bill proposed as part of Biden’s package is being held back from a floor vote in the House by Speaker Nancy Pelosi. She faces negotiations with the Congressional Progressive Caucus that threatens to kill the bipartisan $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill unless they get everything they ask for in the massive reconciliation bill. Their plan includes billions for new programs involving Medicare and Medicaid expansion, free community college, universal pre-K child care, climate change, and much more.
Sanders turned the heat up last week, saying that the Build Back Better plan has everything to do with “saving American democracy.” He says the trillions in new spending will show that the government can still work for people who are “turning to authoritarianism” and are “fighting to prevent a more equitable society.”
Sanders has turned from his older, and at least coherent, communistic ways to embrace and lead the progressive wing’s threats to demolish our form of government altogether. While he is not explicitly threatening a leftist dictatorship if lawmakers do not go along, he says that our government system has “failed” unless he gets his way.
He seems to be unaware of the razor-thin majorities that Democrats now hold in the House and Senate and that the Democratic Party as a whole has not yet adopted the progressive wing’s dream of an absolute socialist American state. Rather than attempt to carefully negotiate based on that reality and that next year’s midterm elections are rapidly approaching, Sanders has decided to push his position on the spending bill to the limit.
Americans are now left to look for help from “moderate” Democrats like Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) in resisting the wild demands of Sanders to “save democracy” from “authoritarians” by adding multiple trillions onto the debt that already has the country staring down the barrel of skyrocketing inflation.
