Bill Maher expressed his disappointment with the Democratic Party’s recent leadership selection during Friday’s episode of HBO’s “Real Time,” suggesting the party failed to make necessary fundamental changes.
During the broadcast, Maher voiced his concerns about the party’s direction under new DNC Chair Ken Martin. “I did not think it got off to a great start, because I think they need to completely reroute themselves, and I don’t think they did it,” Maher stated.
Bill Maher torches Democrats by saying the problem was messaging, in that people were able to hear their crazy ideas:
Chris Hayes: "You have to be authentic, You can't reverse engineer any of this off a blueprint."

The host particularly criticized Democrats’ recurring explanation for their political challenges. “Well, this Ken Martin guy, he said something I’ve heard Democrats say a lot, we didn’t get our message out, and maybe I’m paraphrasing…and I’ve said this before to Democrats, no, you did, that’s the problem. You did get your message out, and people don’t like the message. And the message they sent here, they began it with a land acknowledgment. … I did a whole bit about land acknowledgments, either give it back or shut the f*ck up. And that’s — to me, that signals that we just don’t get it, because you’re not going to give back the land.”
MSNBC’s Chris Hayes, who was present during the discussion, acknowledged the issue, noting, “It is an empty gesture, fundamentally.”
Maher promptly responded with, “Which is what they’re so good at.”
The conversation concluded on a more optimistic note when Hayes mentioned the existence of “a message of what I would call like, commonsense, patriotic, pluralism,” a sentiment with which Maher concurred.
