Mark Carney kicked off his campaign to maintain his position as Canada’s unelected Prime Minister on Sunday, following his call for an April 28 general election. His campaign strategy heavily emphasizes drawing parallels between Donald Trump and his Conservative rival, Pierre Poilievre.
After requesting Parliament’s dissolution from Governor General Mary Simon, Carney branded Poilievre as “Canadian Trump.” He portrayed Trump’s proposed Canadian tariffs – a response to the Liberal government’s border security failures under Justin Trudeau – as an unprecedented crisis, suggesting Poilievre shares Trump’s ideological stance.
The election comes as Canadian law requires a vote by October’s end. Trudeau’s January resignation followed plummeting Liberal support, triggered by multiple crises including border issues, housing market decline, corruption allegations, and a dysfunctional healthcare system promoting euthanasia. His late-2024 Mar-a-Lago visit failed to improve Canadian-American relations.

Trump’s statements about annexing Canada have stirred controversy, with both leading candidates firmly opposing such suggestions. Trump has mockingly referred to Trudeau as the “governor” of America’s “51st” state.
Recent polls show a dramatic shift in political fortunes. The Conservatives’ 25-point lead over combined Liberal and NDP numbers in January has narrowed to a statistical tie following Trudeau’s departure and media focus on Trump’s tariff threats.
Notably absent from Carney’s campaign launch were mentions of China’s billion-dollar tariffs on Canadian goods and admitted executions of Canadian citizens since January.
Trump recently shared his views on the Canadian election with Laura Ingraham:
“I think it’s easier to deal, actually, with a Liberal. And maybe they’re going to win, but I don’t really care. It doesn’t matter to me at all.”
Regarding Poilievre, Trump stated: “The Conservative that’s running is stupidly no friend of mine. I don’t know him, but he said negative things. So, when he says negative things, I couldn’t care less.”
"We will cut the lowest income tax bracket by 1 percentage point."

Poilievre responded by claiming Trump had “endorsed Mark Carney” because he’s “easier to deal with,” while positioning himself as a stronger negotiator who would “put Canada First.”
Questions surround Carney’s American business ties, particularly his company’s relocation to New York. When confronted about potential conflicts of interest, Carney responded defensively: “I follow the rules of the ethics commissioner. I’m following them well in advance of any of the requirements, as you know,” later adding, “Look inside yourself. You start from a prior of conflict and ill will.”
Poilievre, campaigning in Quebec, addressed the Trump situation, stating: “I share your anger and I share the worry for our future, but I also draw great resolve in knowing that we can transform the anxiety and anger into action.” He pledged to defend Canadian sovereignty while maintaining respectful relations with the U.S.
