Congress Announces Investigation Into DA Willis

Republicans in Congress began an investigation of Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis (D) over her alleged misuse of federal tax dollars. The investigation came after a court ruled that Willis engaged in possibly inappropriate behavior by appointing alleged former lover Nathan Wade as prosecutor in the criminal case against former President Donald Trump.

Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Ron Johnson (R-WI) announced the effort in a letter to Willis, seeking information regarding the alleged misuse of federal grant money to her office. According to a whistleblower, the district attorney used some of the funds on “swag.”

There is a second investigation launched by Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) in February.

A former employee accused Willis of using part of a $488,000 federal grant for uses other than the intended effort against youth gangs. The planned youth gang prevention center never ultimately opened.

“Congress has the right to know where federal tax dollars are sent and how they’re spent,” wrote the senators.

“These federal funds were intended to help vulnerable youth and support important law enforcement initiatives, but the Fulton County DA’s office appears to have used them to fulfill their own whims. Any official who squanders taxpayer funds should be held accountable,” the letter said.

“The apparent and significant discrepancy between the purpose of the federal award of taxpayer money and the actual use of that money raises alarms that it hasn’t been used as Congress intended,” wrote the senator.

Willis is leading the prosecution of the former president over allegations following the 2020. A number of other Trump associates are under indictment.

One of the co-defendants accused Willis of having an illicit relationship with Wade. She appointed Wade to a position that Trump’s supporters argue he was not qualified for.

Wade and Willis went on a number of expensive trips together, with Wade allegedly paying for the travel using the salary derived from the public job.

There were significant calls for Willis to step down from her role over the allegations, which she did not. Wade resigned from his position.
