The Democratic Party faced intense criticism this weekend following their opposition to the Trump administration’s deportation of Venezuelan gang members to El Salvador.
The controversy began when U.S. District Judge James Boasberg, known for his role in the FISA warrants against Trump and the Clinton email investigation, attempted to halt the deportation. However, the administration proceeded with the flight as it had already reached international waters. El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele confirmed receiving over 250 gang members, who were subsequently imprisoned at the Terrorism Confinement Center.
Rather than celebrating this public safety measure, Democrats voiced strong opposition. Legal scholar Rebecca Hamilton expressed sympathy for the deportees on social media, stating, “It is important to be very clear. The people you see in this photo have not had any due process whatsoever between being uprooted from their lives [and] families in the U.S. and finding themselves now in CECOT prison in El Salvador.”

Dartmouth political scientist Brendan Nyhan criticized footage of the deportations as “fascist propaganda,” while Senator Chris Murphy condemned the action, saying “[Trump’s] explicit purpose – to allow him to detain and deport gang members and drug traffickers – is bullshit. There’s ALREADY a law on the books to allow him to do that. He doesn’t need new law. So then why is he invoking an 18th-century war powers law?”
Murphy further warned, “Remember, the whole plan is to destroy our democracy so he can turn our government – and your tax dollars – over to his billionaire friends. The slow but steady rollout of war powers (is the Insurrection Act next?) erodes our rule of law – until before we know it, it’s gone.”
The administration’s decision has garnered significant public support, reflected in recent polling. NBC’s survey shows 44% of Americans now believe the country is moving in the right direction, up from 27% in November. Meanwhile, Democratic Party approval has plummeted to 27%, with only 7% expressing strongly positive views.

According to information shared with Daily Caller editor Vince Coglianese, the deported individuals faced serious charges including child sexual abuse, kidnapping, and assault on law enforcement. The Democrats’ opposition to these deportations appears increasingly disconnected from public sentiment, as voters continue to support stronger border security measures.
The administration’s stance on immigration enforcement aligns with widespread public concern about community safety, while Democratic resistance to these policies appears to be further damaging their political standing.
