The Department of Justice is taking a firm stance against inflammatory political rhetoric and threats targeting public officials, particularly in response to recent concerning statements from Democratic representatives.
California Representative Robert Garcia has drawn scrutiny for his provocative language, having previously warned that a Trump re-election would lead to national destruction. His rhetoric recently expanded to include criticism of Elon Musk during a February congressional hearing.
During a subsequent CNN appearance, Garcia escalated his rhetoric, stating, “I think [Musk is] also harming the American public in an enormous way. And what I think is really important and what the American public want is for us to bring actual weapons to this bar fight. This is an actual fight for democracy, for the future of this country.”

These comments prompted interim D.C. U.S. Attorney Ed Martin to launch “Operation Whirlwind,” an initiative targeting threats against public officials. Martin requested clarification from Garcia regarding his statements about using “actual weapons.”
Garcia defended himself on MSNBC, dismissing concerns and telling former Biden press secretary Jen Psaki, “It’s crazy that they want to investigate me for essentially using a metaphor and for taking on Elon Musk.” He later added, “We’ve got to fight fire with fire.”
The Justice Department’s scrutiny extends beyond Garcia. Martin also addressed Senator Chuck Schumer regarding his 2020 comments to Supreme Court Justices, where Schumer had declared, “You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”

In his correspondence with Schumer, Martin emphasized, “Time is of the essence. Your cooperation is more important than ever to complete this inquiry before any action is taken. I remind you: no one is above the law.”
