Elon Musk gives German opposition party global platform

The Alternative for Germany (AfD) party has found a welcoming platform on X, where their policies receive fair consideration beyond the typical ‘far-right’ labels imposed by mainstream media and establishment figures.

This development marks a significant shift in the party’s public presence, particularly after Elon Musk’s endorsement stirred considerable debate in German political circles.

In an unprecedented move, AfD’s chancellor candidate Alice Weidel is scheduled to join Musk for a live conversation on X Spaces on January 9.

DPA reported:
“Musk, a close adviser to US President-elect Donald Trump and a major political donor, recently created controversy by wading into German politics with a full-throated endorsement of the AfD in an opinion piece in the Sunday edition of Die Welt newspaper.”

The potential impact of this conversation becomes evident when comparing recent engagement metrics. Current Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s New Year message attracted merely 54,000 views with predominantly negative feedback, while Weidel’s message garnered 594,000 views with overwhelming support.

Previous X Spaces have demonstrated remarkable reach, with Musk’s conversation with Ron DeSantis drawing 4.5 million live viewers, and his discussion with Trump reportedly generating up to 1 billion impressions, according to X’s AI bot Grok.

This upcoming conversation precedes Weidel’s official nomination as the party’s leading candidate on January 11, ahead of the February 23 parliamentary elections.

“[Musk], who owns electric carmaker Tesla and private space firm SpaceX among other firms, later responded to a pro-AfD influencer: ‘Wait until Alice and I do an X-Spaces conversation. They will lose their minds’ – accompanied by two laughing faces with tears.”

Save the date: On January 9th at 7pm CET, the announced Space with Elon Musk and me will go live on X. We are looking forward to having this exciting conversation and a great audience!
