The FBI’s concealment of the Hunter Biden laptop story’s authenticity before the 2020 election has been revealed through newly released chat messages, showing how the bureau actively suppressed discussion of the matter among its employees.

House Judiciary Committee Republicans exposed chat logs demonstrating the FBI’s involvement in misleading social media platforms about the New York Post’s explosive report, while simultaneously enforcing internal restrictions on discussing the laptop’s legitimacy.

The messages, dated October 14, 2020, reveal a conversation between Elvis Chan, who headed the San Francisco FBI field office’s cyber program, and other bureau employees about implementing what was effectively a “gag order” regarding the laptop story.

Chan, identified by a 2024 House Committee report as the FBI’s primary liaison with Big Tech companies for pre-emptively addressing the laptop story, engaged in revealing exchanges with colleagues about the case’s nature and scope.

When asked about the New York Post article, Chan responded, “Yes we are. c d confirmed an active investigation. no further comment.”

The conversations show FBI staff being explicitly instructed to maintain silence about the Biden matter, with one employee noting “Nobody on call is is [sic] authorized to comment upon NY Post story,” prompting another to reply, “gotta love it.”

These revelations sparked outrage among public figures, with Rep. Nancy Mace declaring, “The FBI’s groupchats revealed they were directly involved in election interference.”

Judicial Watch’s Tom Fitton questioned, “When will there be a criminal investigation?”

According to a 2022 survey, most Americans believed Donald Trump would have secured re-election had voters known about the Post report’s authenticity. The FBI’s decision to withhold confirmation of the laptop’s legitimacy, which they had verified nearly a year before the story broke, played into a broader campaign by media outlets and intelligence officials to discredit the report.

The House Judiciary Committee’s report criticized the FBI’s selective disclosure, noting that while they clarified having no evidence of Russian interference, they crucially withheld their authentication of the laptop – information that could have prevented censorship of the story.
