The Federal Communications Commission has initiated an inquiry into Disney and ABC’s employment practices, investigating potential violations of equal opportunity regulations through their diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies.

FCC Chairman Brendan Carr issued a letter to Disney CEO Bob Iger on Thursday, stating: “I want to ensure that Disney and ABC have not been violating FCC equal employee opportunity regulations by promoting invidious forms of [diversity, equity and inclusion] discrimination.”

The investigation aims to verify whether Disney and ABC have completely eliminated discriminatory practices and maintained compliance with FCC regulations throughout their operations.

Carr reflected on Disney’s evolution, noting the company’s shift from its entertainment-focused roots to becoming embroiled in DEI-related controversies. He expressed concern that Disney’s leadership had extensively implemented DEI policies that potentially influenced company decisions inappropriately.

According to Carr, Disney’s recent initiatives included establishing racial affinity groups and launching the “Reimagine Tomorrow” program. He also pointed out ABC’s implementation of specific inclusion requirements for character representation and hiring practices across various roles.

The FCC chairman highlighted that ABC allegedly enforced quotas requiring 50% of characters to represent underrepresented groups, with similar requirements for writers, directors, and crew members. Additionally, he noted the company’s use of race-based hiring databases and restricted fellowship opportunities.

“It appears that executive bonuses may also have been tied to DEI ‘performance,’ and ABC has utilized race-based hiring databases and restricted fellowships to select demographic groups,” Carr wrote.

Disney responded with a statement indicating they are reviewing Carr’s letter, saying: “We look forward to engaging with the commission to answer its questions.” ABC has not yet provided any response to inquiries about the investigation.

This investigation aligns with the Trump administration’s broader efforts to eliminate DEI practices in federal institutions and combat discrimination in American workplaces.
