A prominent French politician has called for France to reclaim the Statue of Liberty, arguing that America’s current values no longer align with the statue’s symbolic meaning.

Raphael Glucksmann, a European Parliament member representing the socialist movement, made this bold declaration during a convention of his center-left group. His statement was met with enthusiastic applause from supporters.

“Give us back the Statue of Liberty,” Glucksmann declared to his supporters. “We’re going to say to the Americans who have chosen to side with the tyrants, to the Americans who fired researchers demanding scientific freedom: ‘Give us back the Statue of Liberty.'”

He continued his passionate address, stating, “We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently you despise it. So, it will be just fine here at home.”

The iconic monument, erected in New York Harbor during 1886, was originally presented by France to commemorate America’s Declaration of Independence centennial.

A vocal supporter of Ukraine, Glucksmann has expressed strong criticism of President Trump’s stance on the ongoing conflict. He’s also condemned the Department of Government Efficiency’s recent dismissal of numerous federal employees, particularly those in health and climate research positions.

“The second thing we’re going to say to the Americans is: ‘If you want to fire all the people who — through their freedom and their sense of innovation, their taste for doubt and research — have made your country the world’s leading power, then we’re going to welcome them,'” he stated.

The French politician hasn’t limited his criticism to American leadership. He’s also targeted France’s far-right figures, describing them as devotees of Trump and White House Senior Advisor Elon Musk, who leads the DOGE initiative.
