Harris Warned Over Potential Debate Disaster

On Saturday’s episode of “The Chris Wallace Show,” CNN panelists urged presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris to engage with the media and address voters’ questions.

Following President Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 race on July 21 and endorse his vice president as his successor, Harris has yet to hold a press conference or participate in media interviews in the 20 days since the announcement.

Panelists Lulu Garcia-Navarro, John McCormack, and Kristen Soltis Anderson called for Harris to take part in press conferences and media appearances. Garcia-Navarro acknowledged that Harris is currently “riding a wave” and understands the strategic advice to maintain that momentum, but also admitted that Harris needs to “sit down” with the media, as voters remain uncertain about her positions on key issues like the Supreme Court and Washington, D.C. statehood.

McCormack noted the importance of Harris addressing her 2020 campaign positions on her own rather than relying solely on statements from her campaign team. He pointed out that Harris has endorsed Biden’s recent proposal for term limits for Supreme Court justices, and he urged her to clarify just how “radical” her stance is on the issue.

“I think eventually she’s going to have to answer these questions. I don’t know if it matters if she answers them this week, or next week, or the week after, but at a certain point, it does begin to seem like ‘wait a minute, what are they hiding?’” Anderson told the panel.

Anderson insisted that it might be disastrous for the vice president if she waited till the first debate before holding a press conference.

“It will be a shame if we have to get all the way to the September 10 debate before she’s actually asked, ‘Hey, you opposed fracking, now you support it. When did you change your mind and why? Hey, you supported this, now you oppose it. When did you change your mind and why?’ It would be a shame if we have to wait all the way until September,” Anderson said.
