Claims circulating on social media purportedly showing deceased Ugandan soldiers in caskets have been proven false. The viral post, which alleged “Over 500 updf soldiers were killed in South Sudan after their reckless deployment. No one anywhere will report about this!” misrepresents an image from nearly two decades ago.

Investigation through reverse image search revealed that the photograph actually dates back to 2005, not 2025. The Getty Images archive confirms the image depicts fallen Ugandan presidential helicopter crew members, not recent military casualties.

“UPDF soldiers stand to attention in front of coffins carrying the bodies of Ugandan presidential helicopter crew 10 August 2005 at Entebbe Air Base, that perished in a crash with the late former first Vice President of Sudan, John Garang on July 30. Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni warned local dailies, during a funeral service at Kololo Airstrip, from carrying alarmist stories that speculate highly on theories that the crash was by design and not accidental,” states the Getty Images caption.

While Ugandan forces are indeed present in South Sudan, with the latter’s vice president noting these deployments violate UN arms embargo according to Bloomberg, the viral image does not depict any recent military casualties as claimed.
