The National Fraternal Order of Police says over sixty officers have been shot nationwide in the line of duty during the first two months of 2022. Nine have been killed.
It marks a 76% increase in shootings over the same period in 2020, before nationwide movements to “defund” the police. The organization also reports a startling number of officers, 24, have been shot this year in ambush-style attacks.
The sad figures show that an officer has been shot nearly every day this year. But as tragic as these statistics are, they are hardly surprising given how left-wing activists such as Black Lives Matter and Antifa are allowed to incite violence against law enforcement with impunity.
Police union officials say the shrill anti-police rhetoric coming from both streets and city halls is only making a difficult job much more dangerous. Los Angeles, home to progressive DA George Gascón, has seen a 53% increase in murders since 2019.
And across the country this year, it is only getting worse. In just one week in late January, ten officers were shot nationwide and two were killed in a tragic ambush in New York City.
Police there responded to what seemed to be a routine domestic disturbance call to an apartment in Harlem. The mother and one of her sons met the three officers outside and said another son making verbal threats was in the back bedroom.
Police say that son, 47-year-old Lashawn McNeil, opened fire and killed 22-year-old Jason Rivera and 27-year old Wilbert Mora, who died four days later. The third officer, a rookie, returned fire and killed the suspect.
In Phoenix, officers responded to a 911 report of shots fired by an intruder in residence just two weeks later. Authorities say the suspect, 36-year-old Morris Jones, had fatally shot his girlfriend, 29-year-old Shatifah Lobley before police arrived. Jones invited the first officer in but ambushed him by firing several shots.
Another man at the residence placed a one-month-old newborn outside during the incident. Still, four more officers were shot and another four were hit by bullet shrapnel while heroically attempting to rescue the unharmed baby girl. The medical examiner said Jones died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
All nine injured officers have now been released from the hospital.
2022 is on pace to shatter last year’s record and former and current officers say the left’s constant vilification of police is a direct cause. Combine the hatred towards law enforcement with liberal district attorneys blaming guns rather than focusing on criminals and the results are there for anyone who bothers to pay attention.
