Virginia Republican congressional candidate Yesli Vega gathered supporters on the eve of the midterm elections, declaring, “We have to take our country back. It’s insane that we’re talking about jailing parents for protecting their children.”
These words came at a rally held in Triangle, Virginia. Attorney General Jason Miyares (R), Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R), and Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R) all joined Vega for the event.
Vega has made speaking of the American dream a highlight of her campaign, often discussing the story of her parents who immigrated to the United States from El Salvador in search of a better life.
Vega, who is Latino, has been known to troll a little bit online. The former police officer and Prince William County, Virginia supervisor made a post-Monday making fun of Jill Biden for her infamous Latinos are “as unique as the breakfast tacos…” gaffe.
“Welcome to Virginia, Jill Biden,” she wrote. “We know Abigail is embarrassed to campaign with you, but if you make your way down to VA-07 we have a hot plate of breakfast tacos waiting for you!”

“My parents fled war torn El Salvador fleeing the Civil War. And they came to America was nothing but the clothes on their back to hard work and humility. My parents have realized the American dream,” Vega told an enthusiastic crowd. “And because of my parents, I’m fighting to keep the American Dream alive for my children, and their children, and your children. And despite what the other side says about America being racist, despite what the other side says about America being oppressive, I tell them, ‘Look at my face and read my story. You’ll never forget it.’”
“We’ll never drown the American spirit. When people ask, ‘Why are you running for Congress?’ It’s simple guys. We live in the greatest country in the history of the world,” she said. “You saw my family come up on this stage. I am so proud to be the daughter of immigrants.”
“I get choked up every time I see Old Glory, because that flag represents freedom; that flag represents liberty, unmatched, unparalleled,” she continued.
Vega then called out certain Democrats who have entertained the idea of taking legal action against parents who stand up for children in the school system.
“We have to take our country back, yes? We have to take our country back. It’s insane that we’re talking about jailing parents for protecting their children,” she exclaimed. “Who would have thought that we would be having that conversation? But that is how radical, how extreme today’s liberal, progressive Democrat Party has become.”
The Republican candidate is facing off against Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-VA) for what has been reported as one of the most expensive House races in the country. Those interested in viewing the election results for Vega and other Virginian candidates can do so here.
