During his appearance on ABC’s “This Week,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended his stance on the Ukraine conflict, emphasizing the necessity of peace negotiations to end the ongoing war.
Addressing criticism about voting alongside nations like North Korea and Russia at the United Nations, Rubio explained the resolution’s straightforward message about ending a devastating conflict. He highlighted that the resolution, while not criticizing Russia directly, focused on promoting peace negotiations.
"President Donald Trump is trying to bring about peace, the only way to do it, is you have to create space for people to come to the table and talk, and that is something we should all be applauding, not criticizing."

Rubio mentioned a significant development at the Security Council, where the first Ukraine-related resolution in three years passed under President Trump’s leadership. He emphasized that the U.N.’s primary purpose is fostering global peace, suggesting that efforts to broker negotiations should be celebrated rather than criticized.
Drawing attention to what he perceived as political bias, Rubio argued that if a Democratic president had pursued similar peace initiatives, they would likely be considered for a Nobel Peace Prize. He stressed the importance of bringing both sides to the negotiating table, particularly Russia’s participation.

Rubio acknowledged the uncertainty of successful negotiations but maintained that without attempts at dialogue, there would be zero chance of resolution. He warned about the conflict’s potential to escalate into a broader confrontation, urging critics to recognize the gravity of the situation.
Concluding his remarks, Rubio reiterated Trump’s campaign promise to prioritize peace, asserting that this war would have been prevented under Trump’s leadership. He emphasized their commitment to pursuing a fair and sustainable resolution to the conflict.
