President Trump explained his recent tariff decisions today during a White House event honoring auto racing champions, shedding light on why he granted tariff reductions to numerous countries while increasing rates on China.
Earlier, Trump had announced on Truth Social a dramatic tariff increase to 125% for China, citing their “lack of respect for the World’s Markets.” Simultaneously, he offered a 90-day pause and reduced 10% tariff rate to more than 75 other nations. When questioned about the reasoning behind the widespread tariff relief, Trump offered a characteristically candid response. “Well, I thought people were jumping a little bit out of line; they were getting yippy,” Trump explained. “A little bit afraid, unlike these champions.”

The former president emphasized the necessity of standing up to unfair trade practices, particularly from China. “We have a big job to do. No other president would have done what I did,” Trump added. “What was happening to us on trade… not only China but others also… Somebody had to do it (impose tariffs) because it (the status quo) was not acceptable.”
Trump concluded by highlighting the financial benefits America now receives from Chinese tariffs while expressing optimism about future trade negotiations with Beijing.
