The bell-ringing ceremony, a tradition since the 1800s, had never before featured Trump despite his New York roots. His wife Melania previously participated during her “Be Best” campaign in 2019, following Ronald Reagan’s historic first as a sitting president in 1985.
Time CEO Jessica Sibley performed the honors last year when Taylor Swift received the distinction. Trump joins thirteen other presidents, including Joe Biden, who have earned this recognition.
Supporters greeted Trump with “USA!” chants as he arrived with Vice President-elect JD Vance, Melania, and his daughters Ivanka and Tiffany. The shortlist, revealed by NBC’s “The Today Show,” included notable figures like Kamala Harris, Kate Middleton, Elon Musk, and Benjamin Netanyahu.
“Since he began running for President in 2015, perhaps no single individual has played a larger role in changing the course of politics and history than Trump,” Time wrote.
Time revealed its selection criteria, highlighting its 97-year tradition of choosing influential figures. The magazine also announced other category winners: Caitlin Clark as Athlete of the Year, Elton John as Icon of the Year, and Lisa Su as CEO of the Year.

“Trump has proved twice now that he can surf to power on anti-incumbent sentiment, a cult of personality, and divisive rhetoric, including racist and xenophobic attacks,” the article stated, while acknowledging his impact despite criticizing his actions regarding the 2020 election.
Reports indicate uncertainty about a potential meeting between Trump and NYC Mayor Eric Adams, though Adams plans to meet with Trump’s incoming border czar, Tom Homan.
