Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed openness to negotiating with President Donald Trump, signaling potential cooperation on mineral resources as a pathway to ending the ongoing conflict with Russia.

In discussions with Reuters, Zelenskyy acknowledged Trump’s interest in securing Ukraine’s valuable mineral deposits in exchange for continued American support. He emphasized his willingness to explore such arrangements, stating, “These deposits are priceless, it is huge amounts of money, huge. That’s why we need to protect it. If we are talking about a deal, then let’s do a deal, we are only for it.”

The conflict, now stretching beyond two years and backed by $175 billion in U.S. aid under the Biden-Harris administration, remains unresolved. Ukraine previously introduced an investment-focused “victory plan” involving its mineral resources.

Currently, Russian forces control a minority of Ukraine’s mineral wealth, including approximately half of its rare earth deposits. Zelenskyy voiced concerns about potential alliances between Moscow and nations like North Korea and Iran.

“We need to stop Putin and protect what we have — a very rich Dnipro region, central Ukraine,” Zelenskyy told the outlet.

Following his election victory, Trump reportedly engaged in diplomatic conversations with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy. These discussions, which included Department of Government Efficiency’s Elon Musk, left the Ukrainian leader optimistic.

Zelenskyy concluded by stating, “We will protect those trillions. We will prevent Russia from mining the minerals which will later be used to produce technologies for the three countries of the axis of evil. The Americans helped the most, and therefore the Americans should earn the most. And in rebuilding Ukraine, they should have this priority. And they will.”
