Zuckerberg Seems To Confirm FBI Interference Ahead Of 2020 Election

Conservative news sites and even some mainstream media outlets were accused of peddling fake news and disinformation prior to the 2020 election for publishing stories about the contents of Hunter Biden’s laptop, though many of those details have since been begrudgingly vetted and confirmed by left-leaning sources.

This week, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg offered some insight into the reason Facebook, which has been accused of interfering in the electoral process in a number of ways, decided to censor coverage of the Hunter Biden story.

During his recent podcast interview with host Joe Rogan, Zuckeberg confirmed that the FBI reached out to Facebook officials ahead of the presidential election to express concern about supposed Russian disinformation stories intended to impact the outcome of the race.

As a result, he said he felt compelled to limit the dissemination of a New York Post article about then-Democratic nominee Joe Biden’s son. Around the same time, Twitter took the even bolder step of suspending the Post’s account.

Zuckerberg explained that his company took the bureau’s warning at face value and had no reason to suspect a partisan motivation for its request.

“We just kind of thought, hey, look, if the FBI, which I still view as a legitimate institution in this country, it’s like very professional law enforcement, they come to us and tell us that we need to be on guard about something, then I want to take that seriously,” he said.

A number of conservative pundits and GOP lawmakers reacted with indignation upon hearing Zuckerberg’s claims.

Conservative writer Mollie Hemingway put it succinctly in her tweet: “The FBI rigged the 2020 election.”

The bureau’s effort to downplay the Hunter Biden story appears to have extended far beyond the realm of social media, as Rep. Ron Johnson (R-WI) alleged this week. Citing whistleblowers within the FBI, he sent a letter to Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz that asserts agents were explicitly told not to investigate the laptop prior to the 2020 election.

Johnson wrote: “While I understand your hesitation to investigate a matter that may be related to an ongoing investigation, it is clear to me based on numerous credible whistleblower disclosures that the FBI cannot be trusted with the handling of Hunter Biden’s laptop.”
