House Democrat Cynically Cites Bible Against Born-Alive Bill

Democrats in the House largely stood against protecting the lives of children who survive abortion procedures. While most relied on the typical empty platitudes about killing unborn children being nothing more than a “choice,” one dared to cite the Bible as her authority for abandoning born-alive children to death.

Rep. Hillary Scholten (D-MI) calls herself a “pro-choice Christian.” She stood on the House floor last week to speak against the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act that requires abortion practitioners to provide life-saving care to children who survive the procedure.

Scholten used her personal experience with a “complex miscarriage” to claim that her “faith informs my actions.” She then distanced herself from her faith, saying it “doesn’t dictate the policy of an entire nation.” However, she immediately went on to somehow claim that it does.

Scholten cited Jeremiah 1:5, which states: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

She said the verse “doesn’t say the government’s womb or the speaker’s womb. It says the mother’s womb.”

She added: “I believe life is precious, but I reject the idea that if I embrace the sanctity of life, I also must be forced to invite the federal government in to regulate it. We must protect families from unnecessary government intrusion into the most sacred and personal decisions of our lives and our children’s lives.”

Charlotte Lozier associate scholar Michael New is a pro-life researcher. He told the Christian Post that Scholten’s citation of Jeremiah 1:5 stands in opposition to the typical interpretation of the verse. He noted it supports “theological or scriptural arguments in favor of legal protections for preborn children.”

He also said the support of the Born-Alive bill can easily be based on protecting living infants outside the womb “regardless of one’s faith, tradition or one’s stance on abortion.”

The House passed the Born-Alive bill on Wednesday by a 220-210 vote. Every House Democrat except Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX) voted against the measure.

The bill now moves to the Senate, where the narrow Democrat majority is virtually sure to vote against it. Even if one Democrat voted for the bill to create a 50-50 tie, the deciding vote would fall to Vice President Kamala Harris.

Harris has already blasted the Born-Alive bill, tweeting: “House Republicans passed an extreme bill today that will further jeopardize the right to reproductive health care in our country. This is yet another attempt by Republican legislators to control women’s bodies.”

In any event, there is little doubt that “devout Catholic” Joe Biden would veto the bill if it were to reach his desk.
